Getting set up with your electric model trains
Electric model trains have been around for decades but they still give hobbyists the fun, excitement and enjoyment that they always have. While some the technology and models has been changed, the basic principles remain the same. The model trains hobby might be something that you want to explore or be a part of it. If you want to get started with electric model trains but don’t know where to start, then this article is going to cover many of the issues for you.
The first thing that you need to know is the difference between model trains and toy trains. Generally toy trains are for children and have little or no resemblance to the real train. The difference in model trains is that they are a true art form and have incredible detail. They are built, designed and painted in order to resemble a scaled down version of the original in every way. They are a scale reproduction of the real or potential train, which is done via a method known as prototyping.
The first toy trains were made in the early nineteenth century and were powered by a wind up motor. Since that time, electric model trains have taken over as the most popular form. These were introduced in the late 1800s and were first offered as a boxed set. This set included a train and some track in order to create a good layout.
These days if you buy an electric model train set, you will get a kit that can be built and created by you. It will give you a basic railroad design that you can then run your trains on. Generally the basic designs are built in an oval form although they can be more complicated. The great thing about electric is that the set will include lights, accessories and the ability for the train to change direction. This could not be done before electric trains were invented.
The biggest change came in the 1950’s when the realism really started to take hold. At this time you would find much more realistic detail in the trains and the track features that were designed by different companies.
In order to get started you will need to choose the scale that you want to operate. Some of the most popular are the HO, N, Z and G scale model trains. You can also find a huge array of accessories and have the ability to control the train via a computer. You can create and control entire rail yards if you have the space and the means to do so.
You can literally spend thousands of dollars creating the perfect model railroad track and buying trains to operate. There are many hobbyists that spend this kind of money and dedicate their spare time to the hobby. There are also clubs and associations that you can join in order to find out ideas and share information with other like minded people. It is a great hobby to choose.
